7.1.  Generalni opis

There are numerous ponors contained within the main ponor zones in Fatničko Polje. Milanović (1984), in his Figure 10.10. indicates the presence of at least 23 ponors, excluding the estavelles. Some of these are closely associated as ponor-groups.

Bearing in mind that there exists an underground bifurcation of the drainage of this polje, the relative positions and characteristics of the ponors are given in each case in the text below. We are still currently unable to name each ponor but from studying the archive material held within the HET Co. Library in Trebinje, all ponors seem to have been attributed with some form of identification. Until we find otherwise and until we can give GPS location references, we have no option but to offer the HET Co.'s system of identification of ponors. From studying the works of Jovan Cvijić,we have also found references to other ponor groups and this information is now included below. Furthermore, we shall publish images and descriptive text of these features as and when we can accurately identify their names.
To retain the functionality of ponors and help prevent erosion, it has become necessary in many cases to build retaining walls around the inside of the ponor entrances. Examples of this are given in Photo FP7.2.2. below, which has been copied from Milanović (1981). This is the "Pasmica" group of lesser ponors. It has been suggested by Milanović (1990) that the combined maximum input Q of all the ponors in this polje is 120 m³ sec^-1.
