05
September 2003 :
The
situation at the Site on 05 September 2003 was one of profuse growth both
inside and around the outside of the masonry shaft where it meets with
the Canal floor at ground-level. The following Photos illustrate
this.

tree and bush growth in its access shaft

bush growth in the access shaft
of
Vrelo "Oko", immediately prior to clearance at 1250 hrs. on 05 September
2003.

growth on the outside perimeter of the shaft of Vrelo "Oko".

which has penetrated the structure of
the
shaft at ground level on the outside perimeter of the shaft of Vrelo "Oko".

the damaging root systems which has penetrated
the
shaft structure of Vrelo "Oko" on its inside diameter below ground level.

Illustrating another view of the second flight of
descending spiral stone steps inside the cleared shaft of Vrelo "Oko".

Photo
VO-PRp1.- 9.
Illustrating a view of where the third flight of descending
spiral stone steps should be visible inside the
cleared
shaft of Vrelo "Oko". The masonry archway, above the large rubber tyre,
supports the top flightt of descending spiral stone steps.
The
portal to the cave entrance or spring mouth lies somewhere below the pile
of waste materials.

Although the Site was officially
cleared of vegetation on 05 September 2003., it took visits over the following
2 years to remove or destroy the recurring re-growth of vegetation. Details
of the vegetation regrowth and its removal can be seen in the illustrated
reports on the other phases of work at this location.
In 2005 through to 2007,
many of the deeply embedded roots had to be either burned out or treated
with a systemic biodegradable root killer or both.
It is envisaged that further
very minor occurrences of re-growth will continue over future years until
the masonry structure is re-mortared in the PHASE 3. operation.
