The Karstography of the DINARIC KARST IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Part 5.3. Eastern Herzegovina. SLATO POLJE - СЛАТО ПОЉЕ Slato Polje, BiH-RS Trebinje Region - Nevesinje Municipality. Homepage
for the series of Webpages dedicated to Slato Polje.
The
information that we hold about this small Dinaric Karst Polje is also small
but is now due to increase year on year. This is as a result of the area
being within the geographical range of the Society's Main Project in Bosnia
& Herzegovina. As a result, we have decided to replicate the presentational
format of the Fatničko Polje Webpages, in order to shorten the lengths
of the pages and to be able to offer more photographic material as a result.
There are obvious gaps in the range of information that we are providing
because our reconnaissance work in this Polje has only just begun. Further
updates on the Slato Polje Webpages can only happen after our next reconaissance
in 2007.

This very small karst polje is situated in the Dinaric Karst and north-westerly within the area known as Eastern Herzegovina. The nearest large urban conurbation is Nevesinje, 15 km. by road to the north. The main settlement in the Polje, in its south-western corner and after which it is named, is Slato which is situated at an elevation of 950 m.asl. and 145 km. by road from Sarajevo. HISTORICAL
:
We have no comparative data about the present ground-useage of this karst polje. The images below give a general, rather than specific, indication of ground-useage. Most of the flat polje-floor area is now grass pastureland used for sheep grazing purposes. A few tree plantations are established in the north-western area. |

Road
access into and along this karst polje is extremely limited and should
not be undertaken without a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Indeed, the polje area
contains no roads but only rough tracks. It is best accessible in the dry
summer months. During the wet winter period, a full sized truck is the
only means by which the area remains accessible! With a few exceptions,
the area is generally devoid of all modern infrastructure and facilities.

POLJE MAPS.
We can offer a good plan-view of the layout of the polje-floor areas by way of a single image scanned from the former Yugoslav 1 : 25 000 Survey, Sheet 575-4-1. Nevesinje (Slato), dated 1974. The topographic details on the old Yugoslav maps of Bosnia & Herzegovina are those portrayed with great accuracy on the earlier Maps produced under the Austro-Hungarian Administration. SoP1M...MAP

The
polje is formed and orientated along a regional reverse structure in Eocene
Flysch sediments and partly in conglomerates of the Promina Formation.
This is the same reverse fault which formed Cerničko Polje. The south
edge of the polje is formed in Cretaceous Limestone and in which are formed
the ponors which drain the polje. In periods of high rainfall this polje
temporarily floods.
The lowest area of the polje is in the vicinity of Ponor "Mlinica" (1020m.asl. - 3346 ft.asl.) on the southern edge of the polje. |
